Northwestern University Field Hockey Case Study

Challenge

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, with the Chicago skyline in the background, Northwestern University’s Lakeside Field includes a synthetic turf playing field specifically designed for field hockey, seating for fans, and extensive landscaping.

The innovative design has reduced water use, eliminated herbicide/fertilizer runoff, and provided substantial savings in construction and maintenance.

Solution

In 2015, the University replaced their Field Hockey fields with synthetic turf playing surfaces. The innovative design has reduced water use, eliminated herbicide/fertilizer runoff, and provided substantial savings in construction and maintenance. Coaches water the artificial playing surface using Baseline’s BL-5401 Coach’s Button to start/stop programs. Watering the synthetic turf keeps the surface cool and clean. There are 8 zones on the playing field with 1 sprinkler per zone.
