Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD: Building a Smarter Future with WeatherTRAK

Public school district improves landscape health and operational efficiency with smart irrigation technology—projected to save over 22 million gallons of water annually.

The Challenge

Like many public school districts, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD (CFBISD) in North Texas faced a growing challenge: how to maintain over 100 acres of irrigated landscape—across athletic fields, playgrounds, and school grounds—while minimizing water waste, managing costs, and reducing the burden on facilities staff.

Traditional irrigation systems left too much to chance. Aging controllers, inefficient schedules, and a lack of visibility made it difficult to ensure water was being used where and when it was truly needed—or matched the specific needs of various landscapes and plant types.

The Solution

CFBISD began with a single pilot installation of HydroPoint’s WeatherTRAK smart irrigation controller. The goal was to test a system that could respond to real-time weather data, automate irrigation schedules, and give the district better insight into water use.

The results spoke for themselves.

After the successful pilot, the district decided to expand deployment across 20 school campuses—spanning more than 100 acres of irrigated space. WeatherTRAK’s cloud-based platform and flow monitoring capabilities now give CFBISD real-time visibility into its irrigation system. Automated leak alerts and weather-based schedules ensure landscapes are irrigated only when and where it’s needed—helping reduce water waste, protect sports fields, and give staff confidence that the system is working efficiently without constant manual oversight.

The Results

With WeatherTRAK in place, CFBISD is now on track to achieve:

  • Over 22 million gallons of water savings each year
  • Lower utility costs and fewer repair calls thanks to smarter, more efficient irrigation
  • Significant time savings for facilities staff by eliminating manual scheduling and routine inspections

The district’s landscapes and athletic fields are healthier and more resilient—and the facilities team is equipped with the tools they need to proactively manage irrigation instead of reactively chasing down issues.

A Model for Scalable Sustainability

What started as a single-school pilot has now grown into a district-wide smart water management initiative. By choosing WeatherTRAK, CFBISD has set a clear example of how public institutions can leverage proven technology to conserve millions of gallons of water, reduce utility and maintenance expenses, and demonstrate a scalable model for sustainable campus operations.
