Petaluma, Calif. – Sept. 23, 2008 – HydroPoint Data Systems Inc., provider of the WeatherTRAK® Smart Water Management solution, today announced that the company will be attending the League of California Cities Annual Conference in Long Beach on Sept. 24. HydroPoint will be on hand in booth 462 to discuss the company’s Sustainability 2.0 solution that empowers cities to reduce their water footprint by fusing economic benefit with conservation.

According to the American Water Works Association research, 58 percent of urban water goes to landscapes which are typically overwatered from 30 to 300 percent.  Figure 1 shows a breakdown of water usage per household.

To address widespread outdoor water waste, California lawmakers have passed legislation, Assembly Bill 1881, targeting cities, homeowners and water agencies.  AB 1881 requires local agencies to adopt water-efficient landscape ordinances no later than January 2010.  The legislation also mandates performance standards for landscape irrigation equipment, including Smart Water Management controllers, to reduce the wasteful, inefficient consumption of water.

HydroPoint’s WeatherTRAK Smart Water Management solution complies with AB 1881 legislation by reducing water use by up to 59 percent and water runoff by 71 percent. Cities and counties using the WeatherTRAK solution maximize water efficiency while they also drive bottom-line cost savings through conservation.

Leading cities across California, including Petaluma, Newport Beach and Healdsburg, are proactively implementing the WeatherTRAK Smart Water Management solution to prepare for the adoption of AB 1881.  These cities have standardized on WeatherTRAK due to the solution’s performance in more than 23 public agency studies, including the recent Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) study. The LADWP’s Smart Irrigation Controller Pilot Study found that the WeatherTRAK solution captured 95 percent of water conservation potential, ensuring conservation efforts.

HydroPoint’s WeatherTRAK Smart Water Management solution is proven to save four times more water than traditional urban water conservation practices. The solution eliminates waste by dynamically adjusting water output based on plant needs and changing local weather. Automation also boosts the productivity of landscape maintenance teams since workers no longer need to adjust irrigation systems manually when the weather changes, meaning cities can redirect maintenance efforts and costs to other critical infrastructure projects.

Taking place Sept. 24 - 27, the League of California Cities 110th Annual Conference is held at the Long Beach Convention Center, and celebrates this year’s theme of “Sailing into the Future.” More than 1,800 California mayors, council members, city officials and staff will be on hand to discuss issues facing cities such as housing and infrastructure, climate change, public safety, economic development and leadership and government.
