WeatherTRAK Approved for Calif. Green Builder Program

by Jason Unger

PETALUMA, Calif. - WeatherTRAK smart controllers for irrigation management, which have been shown to reduce water usage and urban runoff, have been approved for the California Green Builder (CGB) program. Builders that equip production homes with "green" features may benefit from reduced fees charged by local jurisdictions, improved plan checks and marketing support.

Shea Homes has installed WeatherTRAK at homes and communities in Arizona, California, Colorado and other western states, with 3,000 installations planned before year-end. According to the company, Shea clients are maximizing monthly water bill savings because WeatherTRAK only irrigates when plants actually nee water, based on daily local weather conditions and a host of landscape-specific characteristics, such as soil type, plant material and gradient. The controllers are visibly reducing landscape water runoff, which pollutes local environments and leads to hardscape damage, asphalt corrosion, unhealthy plants, slope erosion and mold.

"WeatherTRAK is a proven, cost-effective solution that provides short- and long-term value for our new home customers and their communities," says John Morrissey, senior vice president of Shea Ventures and J.F. Shea Co., Inc. "WeatherTRAK allows homeowners to maintain their landscapes with more efficient water use, and it also helps the larger community because it conserves water and limits the negative effects of overwatering, like erosion and runoff." "The California Green Builder program makes winners out of builders, buyers and the environment," says Chris Spain, president and CEO, HydroPoint Data Systems, Inc., which provides WeatherTRAK products. "The program helps builders expose buyers to products such as WeatherTRAK, which save them money and protect our natural resources."

WeatherTRAK-enabled smart controllers were selected based on their track record of successes in 20 public agency studies.

The CGB program, supported by the Metropolitan Water District (MWD), the California Building Industry Association (CBIA), and CBIA affiliate the Building Industry Institute, aims to save at least 20,000 gallons of water per year in new homes by motivating builders and buyers to select sustainable landscape designs, plants with lower water needs and water-saving appliances.
